Tonight I would like to focus on a very important topic. One that I am finding myself being challenged on by the Holy Spirit myself. The topic for tonight is – our health.
God has blessed my family with a trip this week to Walt Disney World. We absolutely love Disney World and have for many years. Both of our kids and my wife and I travel to central Florida to Disney and when we do we instantly become like little children all over again.
During these trips we do a ton of walking. It is nothing for us to walk anywhere from 10-15 miles a day. A week before this trip I started a new diet based upon a book written by Rick Warren called “The Daniel Plan”. This is a very no nonsense diet that is incredibly easy to understand and even easier to follow – do not eat anything white – rice, bread, sugar, potatoes, etc. It all turns to sugar in our bodies immediately anyway. Instead, we should eat lots of fruits and vegetables and low fat proteins. As far as exercise goes, it calls for you to start very slowly with walking and then build up as your body lets you to eventually jogging and then running. Light strength training is called for as well, again when you body allows you.
I have been overweight for the better portion of my life. As of this writing I could easily stand to lose around 50 pounds to get to a normal weight for a person my height. During the first week of my diet I lost 8 pounds and only changed my diet. Here at Disney this week, we have averaged walking 10 miles a day and I have maintained my diet, even here where it can be hard to find healthy food to eat.
I write this not to brag, but because I finally listened to a pastor friend of mine who reminded me of 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. Here it is for you to read:
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
So let me use myself as an example for you. At 50 pounds overweight, my body is not a temple for God. It is a low rent, rat infested hotel that I would be ashamed to invite God into. The Holy Spirit lives inside us when we are saved and right now He is living in a place that is less than ideal living conditions. I need to lose weight not just for me and my health, but to be here for my family as well as to honor God by taking care of the body He so graciously gave me.
And you do as well! Are you taking care of your bodies as well? I pray that you are! God is living inside you right now and when you are like me, He is less than comfy in His living quarters.
Truly our health is right up there with praying when it comes to importance. Without our health we live unnecessarily shorter lives. We find doing the simplest things taxing. It also leads to all other kinds of mental disorders, such as lack of self confidence, and even depression.
I am extremely happy that my diet and exercise plan are succeeding. To be honest, the one thing I miss the most is pizza, but to live longer and honor God, I can do without it. After two days of walking 10 miles a day, while I am a little sore, I can honestly say that it has been a blast doing it and in the end, I know I’m making God happy.
I hope my example will stick with you. If you need to make a change, I urge you to do it today. Do not wait until the perfect time, or until you feel better, because that time will never come. I started a diet the week before coming to the one place in the world where you can get any kind of sugary goodness you want and with God’s help I have been able to turn it all down and stick with salads and low fat proteins like chicken. If I can do it, anyone can!
Father, I know there are a lot of people who are not as healthy as they could be. I know that even myself, I used all kinds of excuses such as I’m too busy, or else it costs too much to eat healthier. How can we put a price on our lives Father? God, for anyone who is struggling with their health today I pray you will strengthen them and help them to reach their health goals just as you have done for me. When we ask You are always so gracious to us to help us. Thank you Lord and as I prepare to walk the 17 miles tomorrow around Epcot I pray for cooler weather, lots of shade, and your strength to get me around it. It is the happiest place on Earth God, but it sure takes it out of you! Thank you and in Jesus name I pray. AMEN.
With lots of love,
Pastor Brad Komgenick
