Because we are so excited to be bringing you the beginning of our brand new video series on marriage this weekend, during the week I will be bringing you a series of posts on marriage.
Tonight I want to bring you a Proverb on marriage that I am almost positive you have probably never read or heard about, and it is quite a funny Proverb.
So do you ever remember reading this Proverb? I promise you it is in the Bible. Go ahead and check, I’ll wait……………………………
Ok so yep right there it is. So what do you make of this Proverb? I had to do quite the large amount of research but I finally figured it out, so let me share it with you and tie it back to marriage for you.
You see, God understands that in order to have any kind of strong marriage, you must have great communication with your spouse. So God gave us this Proverb to model for us how most men end up communicating in marriages. So let me illustrate for you:
- To begin, we have the imagery of an eagle in the sky. The eagle is a majestic and beautiful bird and that is what marriage is to men in the begininng. Men see their brides for the first time and they know their lives will never be the same.
- Next we have a snake on a rock. This is symbolic of how men feel once they realize that just because they are married does not mean they no longer have to communicate. So then theirmarriage becomes a lot like a snake on a rock. Men look at the snake and realize the snake has the upper hand. It can strike at any moment from the rocks without the man ever seeing it. So the man gets cautious and tends to just walk in the other direction a lot.
- Finally we have a ship on the high seas. This is symbolic of the rollercoaster ups and downs that continue to go on in the marriage if communication continues to break down. Lots of hurt happens as communications seem to all but stop. Neither is listening to the other. Soon both people wonder if their ship will ever find land again?
- But then we are given an image of a man with a young woman. This of course the way that God wants all marriages to go. With both people remembering what it was like to get married in the first place. To remember why you married the other person. To remember why your heart raced every time you two were together in the beginning. To remember all of the times you just sat together in silence and that was perfectly fine because you were simply with each other.
Many things can hurt a marriage, but one thing is for sure – poor communication will tear a marriage apart. I can guarantee you that if you I spend enough time with any couple whose marriage is on the rocks, I will be able to pinpoint the issue is bad communication.
God knew that we would struggle with communicating with each other, especially as we spend many years together and the newness seems to wear off and we can start to take things for granted, like actually listening to each other or saying “I love you” and “I appreciate you” as often as we should. That is why God gave us the Bible – so that we can read Proverbs like this that explain to us just what we can expect from our relationships.
So if you are feeling like the communication in your marriage could be better, or that you are simply struggling in your marriage and you do not know why, well you have come to the right place.
All this week I am going to share with you what years of schooling and counseling and pastoring have allowed me to put to use in helping hundreds of couples who have struggled with their marriages. Just this past weekend at our monthly marriage retreat, we helped 65 couples to begin to rebuild what they have been slowly losing over the past few years. Even better, we helped to ensure that 98 children would not be children of divorced parents!!!
So I hope you will continue to visit us this week as we share some great posts about repairing and strengthening marriages during the week, and then starting Sasturday we will begin our marriage series and then on Sunday we will have a great podcast on Sunday that will be a celebration of marriage.
So shine up those wedding rings, grab your photo albums with your wedding photos in it and get ready for an entire week all about marriage – our second most important relationship that we will ever have, right behind our relationships with God.
May God bless you this week!
