The Book of Job is absolutely full of wisdom for our lives. Of course many people focus on the intense loss that Job experienced in losing his children, his home, well basically everything he had outside of his life and his wife. Many people will also remember that his wife, who was evidently at the very end of her mental rope, told Job to just “curse God and die.” Harsh words to say the least but we must remember that she experienced the same loss as Job.
The story of Job certainly ends much better than it begins with Job’s faith staying rock solid even with his friends telling him all kinds of bad theology about why he was suffering.
Yet many people skip right over verses 6 and 7 of chapter 1. Let me share them with you here because they are very scary and sobering for all people today:
6 One day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”
Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”
You probably do not even remember reading these words, but as you read them now, what goes through your mind?
Let me break them down for you (it’s what is Pastors do!)
To begin with we see Satan jumping right in line with angels to present themselves to God. Now please do not confuse this as Satan can come and go from Heaven as He pleases because they just is not so. God allowed Satan to enter so that God’s will could be played out through the life of Job.
Now next we see God ask Satan, “Where have you come from?” This may seem odd because doesn’t God know absolutely everything? Of course He does! He is not asking for His own knowledge – He is asking so that Satan will answer and his answer will be written down for us to read throughout time and so that we will know where Satan lives. Knowing this, how does Satan reply?
“From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”
That chills me to the bone. Satan is very much alive and living right here on Earth, moving back and forth in it working in the lives of those who refuse to accept Jesus Christ as Lord. Oh, and he even tried his best to get Christians to believe in Him as well. Unfortunately, far too many Christians try to talk and debate with Satan, but we are guaranteed to lose every single time we try.
Rest assured, Satan is very real and he is to be avoided at all costs. Our only defense when he comes calling upon us is to give him back God’s Word as Jesus did when Jesus was tempted by him. Anything short of that will be failure for us.
Hopefully this example will also show you that every word in the Bible is there for a reason. In Job, God casually slips in the fact that Satan roams the Earth looking to devour and ruin the lives of every single person. Easy to miss if you are not reading every word.
Thanks for stopping by today, and may God bless you!
