In The Boat Alone

in-the-boat-alone1 Corinthians 10:13

“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

All too often we get to feeling like things are simply out of control and they are just too big for us to handle.  We have tried everything we know to do, but nothing is getting better.  Surely this is the largest problem ever known to man and surely I am the only person who has ever experienced this problem before?  It must be this way, because if God knew how to fix it He would have by now because all I do is sit here and pray about it, and since it is up to me to fix it, I have run out of options!  Am I doomed to suffer this problem for the rest of my life?

Absolutely not!  You see, here in 1 Corinthians 10:13 Paul was inspired by none other than God Himself to tell the Corinthian people, and us some 2000+ years later, that basically “there is nothing new under the sun.”  This problem that you are going through?  You are not the first person to be going through it, nor will you be the last.  You see, when Adam and Eve decided to listen to an authority other than God, they opened the door to sin and a fallen world – the very world that we live in today.  Because of that, and because God loves us enough to give us free will and let us choose what we want to do, our world is much less than it was originally designed by God to be.  So we hurt each other.  We say horrible things to each other.  We do horrible, hurtful things to each other.  We lie, we cheat, we steal, we get prideful, we get greedy.  We even kill each other.

None of that was ever in God’s perfect plan for us.  But if you realized how much God loves us, you would know that when we hurt, He does too.  The shortest verse in the Bible is also the one that proves to us just how much God hurts when we hurt – “Jesus wept.”  Stop for a moment and take in that verse and realize what it means.

It means that when you are hurting Jesus hurts too.  It means that when you are confused and simply do not know where to go or what to do next, Jesus is right there with you.  It means that when you think you cannot take another step and have fallen down, Jesus will pick you up and carry you the rest of the way.

God tells us firstly that no matter what we are going through, others have been there before and made it through, so that should give us hope.  Next He tells us that He is faithful to help us if we would step out of ourselves and our pride and simply ask Him for help.  Next He tells us that no matter how grave this problem may seem, you can handle it with His help because He never allows us to go through more than we can handle.  Finally, He reminds us that He always provides a way out for us no matter what the problem is.

It is my prayer that this verse fills your being with hope.  It is my prayer that this verse strengthens your faith in God to do what He says He will do.

I realize that your hurts may be very deep and very severe.  Trust me, we have all been there before.  Each one of us has been hurt by others at one time in our lives or another.  It happens to everyone.  The people that lead happier lives are the people who, when the bad times come, get on there knees and lift their heads up to God and pray:

“Ok God, You said You would help me if I only asked You for help.  Well consider this me asking for your help.  In my own strength and power, I fail time and time again.  I humble myself before You.  You are God and I am now.  You are the Creator of all and I create messes that I constantly need your help to get out of.  I am counting on You to keep your Word and to help me through this issue.  I am not asking you to magically take me out of it because I know there is a reason You let me into this in the first place, so I simply ask You for Your strength to be able to get through this and learn the lesson I need to learn to never let this happen again.  In Jesus name we pray, AMEN!”

If you will humble yourselves, stop fighting with God for power, and turn your problems over to Him, you will be very glad you did because your problems become manageable.  You also build your faith in God because when He helps you, you will write it down so that you will never forger how He brought you through for the next time you have problems.

You are not in the boat alone.  The problem is you are focusing on your problems instead of the One who owns the boat in the first place!!!  Focus on God, let Him be God, and ask for His help!

With Great Love,

Pastor Brad Komgenick
