In Matthew 7:13-14 God teaches us:
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”
While these couple of verses are fairly easy to understand there is much that can be taken away from them and applied to our own lives today.
Here are a few pieces of wisdom that can be taken from these verses:
- Not every person is going to Heaven – these verses make it very clear that there will be many, many more people in hell than will be in Heaven, but clearly the distinction is made that not everyone will make it to Heaven. It is popular today to for people who know little about the Bible and God to think or be told that “a loving God would never let anyone go to Hell” but that simply is not true according to the Bible.
- There will be many surprised people on judgment day – these verses make it clear that only a few will find Heaven. That means that even many of the people who sit next to you in church on Sunday will be thinking they will be in Heaven, yet the Bible tells us differently. I have learned there is a difference between “knowing God” and “knowing about God”. The people who only “know about God” will be the ones getting the surprise. You must “know God” and be in a relationship with Him in order to enter His house. For example, you might “know about” Brad Pitt but that will not allow you to walk into his house. But if you “know Brad Pitt” personally, then he will more than likely invite you into his house. But with God, if you are not allowed into His house, then your only other destination is hell.
- Finally, do your own research – the road to hell is a paved highway and many people are on the road simply because they refuse to do the research about God, or they are simply too prideful to allow themselves to think that someone else could ever be in control of them. God is in control whether you choose to believe that or not. You may not believe in gravity, but I guarantee you that if you jump out a window you are going to fall down, whether you believe it or not. I urge you to look at all of the possible choices out there and then choose the option that is the best possible explanation for all of life. I have done just that over the past 12 years and I can easily come to the conclusion that God is the only choice that even makes any sense at all both mentally and scientifically.
So there you have it. Even from 2 little verses, the Bible is absolutely full of information if you take the time to truly examine what you are reading. And I ALWAYS urge you to do just that – never take anyone else’s word for what the Bible says. You must take the time to delve into exactly what God wants you to learn from the words He had written down.
“Well I go to church and I let the Pastor explain it to me. After all, that’s what he gets paid for right?” Wrong. Since I am a pastor I can tell you that our job is to interpret God’s Word (the Bible) for you to the best of our ability. Yet since man is imperfect, mistakes can and will be made. And sometimes, man will make mistakes on purpose to give himself more power than he should have. That is why there are so many false religions in the world today. Usually some charismatic man will twist a few verses in the Bible to fit his needs and PRESTO, a new religion is born that says it is fine for a man to have thousands of wives, all who must submit to his every whim. Oh and every single follower of these false religions is driving a Ferrari on the highway that leads directly to hell.
You see, God loves us enough to let us choose. We get to choose what and who we will believe in. Then God gives us the Bible and we get to decide whether we will believe it and stay on the narrow road to Heaven, or stray from it and head to the on-ramp of hell.
“You are such an elitist! What gives you the right to say that Jesus is the only way to get to Heaven? Can you possibly believe that every single person who does not believe that Jesus is the only way to Heaven will end up in hell?”
Yes. Exactly. I believe that the Bible is 100% the error-free inspired Word of God and God says that Jesus is the only way to Heaven. “No one will see the Father unless it is through Me.” That’s good enough for me! My faith is in the work that Jesus did for all of mankind on the cross. He died for us and paid for our sins so that we would not have to.
By the way, what is so wrong with that? Jesus did not say that we need to kill a bunch of people in order to get to Heaven. Jesus never tells us to hurt anyone else ever, and that is a good thing right? Jesus tells us to put others needs ahead of our own, and that is a good thing right? In fact, if you read all 10 commandments, not a single one of them is there to make sure we do not have fun or enjoy life. They are there to ensure that we do not hurt ourselves or anyone else, and that is a good thing right?
You must choose which road you will travel down. Did you know that if you decide not to choose, you really are choosing hell? Not choosing, means you are not choosing Jesus as your Savior for the work He did for you, and that means you are indeed choosing hell.
I only ask that you pick up a Bible and read it and ask as many questions about it as you can. I promise you that not all of it will makes sense. I have now read the Bible cover to cover over 18 times and I still learn something new from it each time. But in the end, Jesus as Savior and Creator is the only logical and sensible explanation for life. If you believe that man evolved from some primordial ooze or that two huge space rocks banged together and everything we have is created, then all I can tell you is enjoy your ride on the huge highway.
So if I am wrong in my faith in Jesus, then I just die like all other non-believers and that is that. Life truly would be meaningless, worthless, empty, and a waste of time.
But if I am right, then Heaven and hell are real, life has a purpose and meaning and value, and YOU MUST CHOOSE.
I pray you make the right choice because eternity is an extremely long time. Also since the road to Heaven has fewer people, the drive is a lot nicer, I promise!
